There will be a presentation on Nut Allergies by Chilka Rawal, PA-C
A recent study found that 2% of children, or 1.6 million
kids in the United States have a potentially life-threatening food allergy. As
a parent, it can be frightening to have to wonder if your child will
accidentally encounter their allergen while at school, a friend’s house, summer
camp etc.. The American College of Asthma and Immunology recommends strict
avoidance and to always carry an Epinephrine auto injector. This is easier said
than done but there is hope on the horizon.
Board certified Allergists have begun to
offer Oral Immunotherapy to foods. This treatment involves a
patient taking a very small quantity of the food product (e.g. peanuts)
daily. The quantity is slowly increased over weeks to months in an
allergist's office. Eventually the patient will reach a state where they become
desensitized to the allergen. As a result, the child would be able to ingest
the previously allergenic food with little risk of any reactions.
