PTO Meeting - Tuesday, March 10, 2020

2019-2020 Parent Teacher Organization

The 4th PTO meeting will be held on
Tuesday, March 10, 2020
7:30pm
Lower School Cafeteria

There will be a presentation on Nut Allergies by Chilka Rawal, PA-C
A recent study found that 2% of children, or 1.6 million kids in the United States have a potentially life-threatening food allergy. As a parent, it can be frightening to have to wonder if your child will accidentally encounter their allergen while at school, a friend’s house, summer camp etc.. The American College of Asthma and Immunology recommends strict avoidance and to always carry an Epinephrine auto injector. This is easier said than done but there is hope on the horizon.
Board certified Allergists have begun to offer Oral Immunotherapy to foods. This treatment involves a patient taking a very small quantity of the food product (e.g. peanuts) daily.  The quantity is slowly increased over weeks to months in an allergist's office. Eventually the patient will reach a state where they become desensitized to the allergen. As a result, the child would be able to ingest the previously allergenic food with little risk of any reactions.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Chilka Rawal, PA-C graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science from the University of Florida in 2004. She received a Bachelor of Science degree and Physician Assistant certification from Pace University-Lenox Hill in 2008. Prior to joining Allergy Partners, Chilka worked in a private practice specializing in Allergy and asthma and pediatrics for over 6 years. Currently she runs the OIT program in the Allergy Partners of NJ locations.

Message from Dr. Paula Valenti, Principal - Addressing Coronavirus

Dear Parents/Guardians/Students and Staff,

I am writing to you regarding the school’s plan, should a need arise, to address coronavirus (COVID-19) and the continuity of instruction. Teachers will be posting information to their blogs that will keep families updated on the school’s actions relative to the instructional program. Teachers will also discuss strategies for the continuity of instruction when they meet at the next faculty meeting on March 6th. Families are encouraged to visit teacher blogs for continued communications.

The World Health Organization, National Center for Disease Control, New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) and Bergen County Department of Health have been responding with information on the Novel Coronavirus that was first identified in Wuhan, China. I encourage families to visit these organizational websites for the most accurate and up to date information on the virus. The CDC and World Health Organization will continue to closely monitor the situation providing on-going guidance. In addition, the NJDOH has established a hotline (1-800-222-1222) to answer questions about the coronavirus (COVID-19). This 24-hour public hotline, operated by the Poison Information and Education System, is staffed with trained healthcare professionals who can accommodate callers in multiple languages.

The NJDOH is also reporting widespread influenza (flu) activity in all regions of the state. They have issued action steps for schools and childcare centers to follow with regard to monitoring students and staff and have stated that schools should follow standard procedures for routine cleaning and disinfecting. Staying informed and taking everyday preventive actions are always recommended to minimize the spread of viruses.

Please take time to review the links below that contain guidelines and helpful information:

The health and safety of our students and staff will remain the school's top priority, and we will continue to work cooperatively with the Archdiocese, NJDOH and BCDOH to ensure timely communications.

Thank you for your support of, and faith in, our efforts to ensure a positive school experience for all.

Sincerely,
Dr. Paula Valenti, Principal
